Notable Albums of 2009
By an Amazon.com customer
It's Not Me It's YouIt's Not Me It's You by Lily Allen
Buy new: $13.10 / Used from: $7.49
Second album from British singer Lily Allen, with provocative singles "F**k You" and "Not Fair". The album has received generally favourable reviews from critics.
Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & PoliticsTestimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics by India Arie
Buy new: $11.60 / Used from: $1.99
Another excellent album from India Arie, offered as a follow-up to her 2006 volume of Testimony. India is at her best, with deep lyrics and stunning vocals.
All I Ever Wanted (Limited Edition CD/DVD)All I Ever Wanted (Limited Edition CD/DVD) by Kelly Clarkson
Buy new: $16.97 / Used from: $4.10
Kelly released this album on the back of the My December label controversy, and one can't help but notice that she seems much less involved with this one. Nonetheless, it is still an excellent, fun pop album.
Hannah Montana: The MovieHannah Montana: The Movie
Buy new: $8.95 / Used from: $0.98
This list unfortunately would be incomplete without including the soundtrack to hit Hannah Montana movie. Hannah Montana has proved to be one of the most overrated phenomena of the year.
In a Perfect World...In a Perfect World... by Keri Hilson
Buy new: $8.51 / Used from: $2.02
One of a few dark horses of the year. No one expected this album to do anywhere near as well as it did. In fact, many expected this not to be released at all with its frequent push-backs. Not the best of the year, but solid.
EpiphanyEpiphany by Chrisette Michele
Buy new: $10.75 / Used from: $4.00
Follow-up album to Chrisette's 2007 debut. This one is a little more commercial, but without sacrificing the quality. Shows off her voice very well.
Fantasy Ride (Limited Edition CD/DVD)Fantasy Ride (Limited Edition CD/DVD) by Ciara
Buy new: $14.29 / Used from: $1.27
This one received mixed reactions from fans, largely because much of the album leaked early on. Although a couple of the best leaked songs were excluded (Supernatural, for example), the material here is certainly enjoyable.
Leave This TownLeave This Town by Daughtry
Buy new: $9.88 / Used from: $6.15
A long-awaited followup from American Idol favourite Chris Daughtry. His second album is more of a grower than his debut, but the quality is still there.
Battlefield (Deluxe CD/DVD)Battlefield (Deluxe CD/DVD) by Jordin Sparks
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $2.55
Sophomore album from Season 6 American Idol winner Jordin Sparks. Jordin is finally allowed room to have somewhat more mature (but still age-appropriate) material, so she can shine a lot more than on her debut.
Lady LoveLady Love by Letoya
Buy new: $40.06 / Used from: $28.10
Another dark horse of the year, and generally hailed as one of the best R&B albums of the year on several messageboards. A definite improvement over her already solid debut.
Brand New EyesBrand New Eyes by Paramore
Buy new: $13.64 / Used from: $5.25
Third studio album from Paramore, with their usual level of quality. As a nice added bonus, the Twilight-soundtrack offering Decode is included on international versions.
Kiss and TellKiss and Tell by Selena Gomez and the Scene
Buy new: $9.48 / Used from: $3.74
This seems to be the year of the Disney channel star, as many of their young actresses have released debut albums. Selena is a good actress, but only a mediocre singer.
Here We Go AgainHere We Go Again by Demi Lovato
Buy new: $8.69 / Used from: $4.00
And another Disney star, Demi Lovato. Demi is one of the top Disney actresses of the year, appearing in her own show as well as a couple of films. As Disney actresses go, she has a good voice, but like the others, her material is quite average.
This Is UsThis Is Us by Backstreet Boys
Buy new: $10.95 / Used from: $3.43
A fairly unprecedented return from the Backstreet Boys, although now short one member. I haven't actually listened to this yet, but I don't think anyone would have expected the Boys to last this long.
She WolfShe Wolf by Shakira
Buy new: $9.23 / Used from: $3.95
A much more fun album than its politically-focused predecessor. Shakira sounds great, but the album suffers mostly from being way too short (only 9 new English songs), and repetitive (several versions of the same song).
This Is ItThis Is It by Michael Jackson
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $3.44
The posthumous release from Michael Jackson, featuring a collection of his biggest hits. His untimely death was certainly one of the most notable events of the year.
Funhouse- 2009 Tour EditionFunhouse- 2009 Tour Edition by Pink
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $4.92
While Funhouse originally came out last year, Pink's tour editions tend to be worthwhile. Here, Pink offers the original Funhouse album with two extra tracks, and bonus DVD of live versions and music videos.
In Love & WarIn Love & War by Amerie
Buy new: $8.69 / Used from: $2.48
Yet another dark horse album, and another that has been called the best of the year. Amerie unfortunately has never received the acclaim she deserves, largely due to a lack of support from her label. This album shows her at her best.
EchoEcho by Leona Lewis
Buy new: $5.98 / Used from: $2.99
A follow-up to Leona's debut Spirit, this time featuring some more upbeat material. This one seems to have received mixed reviews (as well as some debate over whether a re-release is forthcoming, given her song on the Avatar soundtrack).
Kris AllenKris Allen by Kris Allen
Buy new: $10.52 / Used from: $0.98
An album that seems to have gone quite overlooked, especially given the popularity of the Kris vs. Adam finale of last year's American Idol. Kris has given a solid debut, although something of a grower.
For Your EntertainmentFor Your Entertainment by Adam Lambert
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.77
Adam's debut also performed well, with catchy and enjoyable tracks all the way through. Although a few more slow tracks to show off Adam's voice would be appreciated, he has crafted a solid debut.
Just Like YouJust Like You by Allison Iraheta
Buy new: $9.59 / Used from: $1.00
And a third contestant from the most recent round of American Idol. Allison's debut suffers mostly from the common problem of young Idol contestants: her material becomes constrained by the interest in keeping her age-appropriate. She does the best she can with what she's given.
The Fame Monster [Deluxe Edition]The Fame Monster [Deluxe Edition] by Lady Gaga
Buy new: $14.88 / Used from: $9.49
A re-release of Lady Gaga's hit debut, producing several singles and launching her as one of the biggest stars of the year. Lady Gaga does have quite a voice, and her material is quite catchy, although overplayed.
Rated RRated R by Rihanna
Buy new: $11.41 / Used from: $4.99
A much darker album, thought to be in response to her issue with Chris Brown. This album contains some of Rihanna's most interesting, and most personal material to date.
GraffitiGraffiti by Chris Brown
Buy new: $14.35 / Used from: $3.10
Many expected Chris to lay low after the incident, and were surprised when his album was pushed out within the year. Especially as his singles and album itself essentially coincided with Rihanna's release. For most, he should have waited until the hype died down.
I Dreamed A DreamI Dreamed A Dream by Susan Boyle
Buy new: $4.28 / Used from: $0.94
One of the biggest surprises of the year, not only in terms of talent but also for sales. Susan's debut has had consistently high sales for the past several weeks, knocking some popular frontrunners out of the number 1 slot.
I Am...Sasha FierceI Am...Sasha Fierce by Beyonce
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $5.11
A rather unnecessary updated version of Beyonce's double-disc album, offering a handful of new tracks. The album was fine in its original incarnation, and its frustrating for the average fan to miss out on bonus tracks because they supported the artist in the first place.
THE E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies)THE E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) by Black Eyed Peas
Buy new: $9.67 / Used from: $4.71
The Black Eyed Peas have produced some of the most catchy (or irritating, depending on your opinion of them) singles of the year.
The BridgeThe Bridge by Melanie Fiona
Buy new: $8.71 / Used from: $3.96
The true dark horse of the year, whose album is easily one of the best. Melanie has an exceptional voice, and her material is radio-friendly yet has depth. Can't wait to see what she comes out with next.
Black BookBlack Book by Jully Black
Buy new: $23.09 / Used from: $5.79
Who would have guessed that Jully would still be going strong after three albums? The Canadian artist also has a powerful voice and knows how to use it to her advantage. While her sophomore album was slightly stronger, she continues to put out great music.
Element of Freedom: Deluxe Edition (Incl. Bonus Tracks + Bonus DVD)Element of Freedom: Deluxe Edition (Incl. Bonus Tracks + Bonus DVD) by Alicia Keys
Buy new: $16.41 / Used from: $7.51
Another of the best albums of the year, with Alicia providing quality music as always. Many consider this her most personal album, in light of recent controversy.
Stronger with Each TearStronger with Each Tear by Mary J. Blige
Buy new: $4.89 / Used from: $1.32
A solid album, although it can seem a bit rushed. This does not top The Breakthrough, although Mary is strong as always. Biggest disappointment is the lack of "Stronger", easily one of Mary's best songs.
Memoirs of an Imperfect AngelMemoirs of an Imperfect Angel by Mariah Carey
Buy new: $4.50 / Used from: $3.40
Mariah's latest offering seems to be a decent blend of her earlier style while remaining current. The album is quite ballad-heavy, but luckily, most of them work.
I Look to YouI Look to You by Whitney Houston
Buy new: $7.67 / Used from: $0.32
One of the most anticipated of the year, Whitney released her first album in quite a while. At times, it seems to try too hard to be contemporary, but many of the songs have Whitney truly shining.
Britney Spears: The Singles CollectionBritney Spears: The Singles Collection by Britney Spears
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.30
A fairly pointless release, collecting all of Britney's hits. Most of her fans would already have these songs, and anyone else just wouldn't be interested.
